And, lo, the hunter of the east has caught the sultan’s turret in a noose of light.

Spanish life is not always likeable but it is compellingly loveable – Christopher Howse: ‘A Pilgrim in Spain’..

Cosas de España/Galiza

An update on the regularisation of illegal immigrants. The plan to grant legal status to around half a million migrants has attracted a staggering 1.3 million applications – close to 3 times the government’s initial estimate.

Overtourism: Thousands of people across Spain took to the streets last weekend as fed-up residents staged fresh protests over the country’s deepening housing crisis. Demonstrators marched through Málaga, Cádiz, Tenerife, La Palma and Cáceres, chanting against soaring rents and the spread of tourist accommodation. . . The largest demonstration took place in Malaga, where organisers said the city had reached breaking point after years of rising rents, stagnant wages and the rapid spread of holiday apartments.

Europe

Dutch home seekers have overtaken Brits and Germans as Spain’s biggest foreign property buyers, according to new data, ending a lead both groups have broadly held for nearly 3 decades.

The World Cup

The commentator on British TV said at half time that Casamiro’s performance in the first half was so bad he’d be astonished if he came out for the 2nd half. I agreed with that. So, I guess we were both surprised when he did. And even more surprised when he scored Brazil’s equalising goal . . .

Did Paraguay really defeat Germany? And Morocco, The Netherlands? It seems so. Not in a parallel galaxy but here in this one. The German team manager says he won’t ‘run away’ but he probably won’t have much choice. The country is in shock, especially as their team fluffed several penalties.

Nice quote:  The Paraguayan defence was fiercely dogged in a 4-5-1 formation. This was at least a fluid 4-5-1. Occasionally it shifted to 4-6-0.

  • I don’t know which president would gain the most votes for doing the most good for the USA but I’m pretty certain who’d be voted the president who’s done the most harm. And he’s got another 2 years in power. And will surely be more nihilistic if the Republicans lose the midterm elections.
