The Middle East War

The New York Times: How Trump Took the U.S. to War With Iran. In a series of Situation Room meetings, President Trump weighed his instincts against the deep concerns of his vice president and a pessimistic intelligence assessment. Here’s the inside story of how he made the fateful decision.

On the basis of Netanyahu scenarios which the CIA described to Trump as ‘farcical’.

As of now, the US and Israel are said to disagree that Lebanon was included in the ceasefire. Hence the Israeli attacks on Beirut.

  1. Netanyahu knows far more about the Middle East than Trump.

Richard North assesses Reza Sad’s analysis of Israel’s attack on Hezbollah.

“With the media focusing on the casualties, Sad calls the action an historic strike on Hezbollah which, in 10 minutes, reduced 100 Hezbollah operational centres across all of Lebanon to rubble and blood. It can, he says, be considered the result of one of the finest intelligence operations in the world – surpassing even the killings of Hassan Nasrallah and Yahya Sinwar.

What triggered the strikes, it seems, is that Hezbollah, having lost the full logistical support of the Islamic Republic, intended to launch a swift and powerful coup to topple the government of Michel Aoun, seizing complete control of Lebanon.

Then, after fully consolidating power, it intended to enter direct negotiations with the United States itself through a delegation consisting of Naim Qassem and Nabi Berri -thereby bypassing Israel altogether.

Israel, however, with complete intelligence dominance, caught wind of the plot and, just a few hours before the coup, without any prior warning, levelled the 100 Hezbollah centres across Lebanon. Thereby the plot was neutralised, with an intensity of bombing described by some as “hell on earth”.

Again, one can take this any which way, but the narrative serves as a reminder that there are multiple views on the conduct and achievement of this conflict. Pierce the Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS) and things may look very different.”

    Debatably,

    • Perry,

I’m unclear on the point(s) you are making. Can you expand, less cryptically.

Are you saying Trump was justified to believe Israel’s intelligence around Iran and the prospects of rapid success?

Or that Israel’s success against Hezbollah in Lebanon was not only justified but has wider significance for the war against Iran?

Or simply that Trump is not as [choose negative adjective] as he is painted? Smarter than he’s given credit for?
