Why, despite the rising temperatures, Malaga is a bigger-than-ever attraction for Brits of all ages. I know the city quite well, having first visited it almost 40 years ago but wonder if I will ever go there again for my boquerones fritos. Or the salmonetes I’ve also enjoyed there. Not to mention the now-illegal chanquetes(whitebait). Though possibly still available, to those who don’t look like they work for the government.

The USA
If, like me, you need to know that the Taylor Swift nonsense is about, this article will help. And leave you shaking your head – a possible ‘microaggression of course – even more than usual. What a commentary on today’s society, which seems to have returned to a Dark Age level of credulity, at least in the USA. Says the writer: Those peddling the theory the pop star’s relationship is a deep-state plot don’t believe it but know people will lap it up. BTW . . . When he writes ‘football’, he means American Football, where the foot is hardly ever used, and not real football. American exceptionalism at work. As with the non-global Baseball World Classic, involving a mere 11 countries, possibly soaring to 16 by 2026.
Quotes of the Day
- The secret of a good marriage is separate bedrooms. Between cohabiting partners, not lovers, I guess.
- There’s not much point in reflecting on the enduring appeal of conspiracy theories in American politics.
The Way of the World/Social Media
From that article on Taylor Swift, which you might not have read . . .In a political culture now defined by grievance and victimhood, people of all political ideologies believe there are powerful dark forces out there constantly thwarting their hopes and ambitions, plotting to destroy their vision of what the world should be. You can get far more attention playing to those grievances by promoting insane ideas about rock stars or foreign leaders than you can ever gain by making a case for your ideas. In the age of digital ubiquity, social media reach and the political silos that our online world has created, it’s so much easier and more profitable. Famous people with large platforms who not only don’t believe most of what they peddle but actually have contempt for the intelligence of their audiences get successful and rich by feeding them pap.

You can get my posts by email as soon as they’re published. With the added bonus that they’ll contain the typos I’ll discover later. I believe there’s a box for this at the bottom of each post. I guess it’s logical that this doesn’t appear on the version given to me . . .

Buen día Colin,
Thank you for the article on the T. Swift phenomenon. I know the name and heard some music that, to me, was not remarkably worth listening to. The extent of the nonsense related to this influencer is disheartening but not surprising.
Americans (U.S.A. residents) have long been in training to unquestioningly believe and embrace nonsense, propaganda, and commercial and political lies and mischaracterizations. The BBC demonstrated this in a series about Edward Bernays, The Century of the Self. A relatively low resolution version of the program is available on YouTube, with the first part HERE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnPmg0R1M04).
Maybe this is the way the end of empire looks.

Many thanks, Aleksandras. Sorry for the delay. I will take a look tonight at the YouTube offering, if I can.

That is fine, Colin. I mention this because it fits with matters that you seem to find interesting. To me, this series should be a mandatory part of general education, if only as encouragement for one to question why one thinks or believes a particular thing. This provides a history and documentation of the pervasiveness and effectiveness of manipulation by business and government . It is not homework and I will not demand an essay 😉

Hi, Aleksandras
A favour . . .
I received this message from a friend in Pv so am doing some research among readers I’m in contact with.
Dear Colin,
Please get rid of all the boilerplate stuff on top of your daily posts. It doesn’t help. It’s confusing. It’s repetitive.
But you can certainly leave the stuff on the bottom which is useful. But if you could change the size of the type to smaller, people could who have already read it can more easily ignore it.
Do you agree with him. Please be honest. I’m happy to make the changes if my current format really is confusing/irritating to readers.
Many thanks.

Colin — I have not had any adverse sense in any way regarding your presentation. I have always felt that it was nicely done and accessible. I was surprised to see the irritation expressed by your Pv friend. But, people can be very different in their perceptions of the same thing.
If I had a problem with the size of your fonts, I would hit Ctrl+ or Ctrl- to change it to my liking. And, if I did not want to see some of the content, I would quickly skim over it without paying it much mind.
Bests,
Aleksandras
