Awake, for morning in the bowl of night has flung the stone that puts the stars to flight.

And, lo, has caught the sultan’s turret in a noose of light!

Spanish life is not always likeable but it is compellingly loveable

Christopher Howse: ‘A Pilgrim in Spain’

Cosas de España/Galiza

There’s a beautiful exhibition of Soralla’s work in the Royal Palace, ending with a virtual reality experience, my first. But a word of advice if you’re thinking of attending it . . . The entrance is not in the main courtyard despite there being a massive and misleading poster above the 2 entrances there. It’s round the corner on the main street, though there’s little indication of this. We’d stood for 20 minutes in the sun before finding this out.

When . . .

  • 1. Black is surprisingly white. . .

For 120 years the ‘black’ Jesus of Lepanto has been venerated as one of Spain’s most important religious statues, with its dark complexion giving it a distinctive place in Christian iconography, But restoration has revealed that it ain’t black. Just dirty.

Weaker Spanish banks are having their crucial support props torn away, says AEP here. So, which are they?

Some folk think there’s too much sexism at the Madrid tennis Open – because the clothes of the ball-girls ‘feminise’ them. I doubt that many Spaniards feel this way. En passant . . . Is ‘ball-girls’ really acceptable these days?

Who’d have believed it? Over the last 15 years, Galicia has become a centre of artisan ice-cream production. I thought there were a lot of specialist shops in Pv city.

UK

Will we ever be a republic? monarchy is weaker than it looks. But it is blessed with dreadful opponents.

Sorry, Man City fans. Erling Haaland ain’t the successor to the sainted Dixie Dean.

France

Football again . . . This writer alleges that propaganda and carbon politics have transformed the French domestic league, still the world’s greatest talent factory, into a grotesque sporting pantomime. Not happy reading. But a warning for the UK’s Premier League.

Did you know?

A hundred years ago yesterday, Adolf Hitler was fomenting rebellion down in Bavaria. Well, he had to start somewhere and it’s close to his native Austria.

Finally . . .

I got another message yesterday from a lovely young lady, this time on wotsap, not FB. After due consideration I decided not to even tell her I wasn’t Sr. Gomez: Hola Sr. Gomez, feliz viernes, mañana es fin de semana festivo, ¿cuáles son sus planes?

  1. Centuries of smoky candles, whereas I was expecting the watermelons to claim the coal fired industrial revolution has stained Lepanto’s escutcheon.
