Awake, for morning in the bowl of night has flung the stone that puts
the stars to flight
.

And, lo, the hunter of the east has caught the sultan’s turret in a noose of light.

Spanish life is not always likeable but it is compellingly loveable – Christopher Howse: ‘A Pilgrim in Spain’.

Cosas de España/Galiza

Inevitably, the numerous winter storms have hit the shellfish grounds very hard. Supply is well down on normal years. And prices probably way up.

A tad surprising to read that it’s quicker to get to Andorra from Galicia than to Barcelona by train. But, then, many old routes are very slow.

Something else that’s less than quick . . . The Galician courts have a backlog of 200, 000 cases and are putting their faith in a new processing system. Fingers crossed.

Rugby is played in Galicia. In fact, one of the teams competing in the weekend’s final of a competition goes under then name of Os Ingleses – The Englishmen. The captain is David Lema. who possibly isn’t English, as his post-match comments were in Gallego.

This car has been at the side of the road for weeks now. Originally abandoned but now calcinated, as they say here. One wonders why.

Europe

Big changes in Hungary, where Orban has been ousted, much to the relief of Brussels.

The United States of Trump USA

China

Trump said China exports turbines but doesn’t have any in the country itself. A complete lie, of course. It is now the leader in solar and wind power.

The Way of the World

As much as travel is meant to broaden the mind, it is also easily exploited. Go almost anywhere on Earth and you’ll be confronted with overpriced attractions promising far more than they deliver, set up by nefarious crooks who see tourists as little more than perambulating cashpoints.

Spanish

  • Acribillar: To bombard, pepper with.
  • Echar a andar: To start up, set in motion, jump start

English

  • Looning: Slang for balloon fetishism.
  • Headcanon: “Something a fan imagines about the characters (such as a scenario or relationship) but that doesn’t appear on screen/on the page”.
  • Chef’s kiss: In vogue, it seems. To put your forefinger with you thumb and take them to your lips.

Did you know?

That banana flavour might not be terribly genuine.

You Have to Laugh

Another uncomfortable Finn

Finally . . .

A 1770s view of cucumber, shared by me . . . It has been a common saying of physicians in England, that a cucumber should be well sliced, and dressed with pepper and vinegar and then thrown out, as good for nothing.
