The Middle East War

So . . . At the cost of many billions of dollars and uncounted lives, the US and Iran are back were they were before Trump started his ‘little excursion’. They are talking to each other and the Hormuz Strait is to be opened.

This is under the predicted ceasefire arranged by Pakistan and, as I also predicted, accepted by Iran, as it would be stupid not to have done so.

Trump, of course, is trumpeting the return to the status quo ante as a huge victory. I doubt he – or his base – would understand the word Pyrrhic.

A couple of non-MAGA perspectives:-

Video: Trump backs down again. Podcast

Video: Trump chickens out again.

But, of course, the war has been a huge success in distracting the media from the Epstein files.

And Israel is not happy.

  1. “This is a victory for the United States that President Trump and our incredible military made happen,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a social media post, adding that he “got the Strait of Hormuz reopened”.

Does Leavitt really believe the verbal diarrohea she spouts? Sadly I think she does. Or she is on a very well paid gig.

So, the conflict has been kicked down the road a couple of weeks. Good news in the short term, but we will see.

Will the USA ever recover from this on the global stage? I would like to believe not in my lifetime, but people are so fickle. Soon the World Cup will come around, and all will be forgotten.

In rhe meantime I doubt the petrol station prices will go down as quickly as they have shot up. Yesterday, I drove past a Repsol selling their premium diesel at 2.06€/litre.

Had a lunch over Easter with a chap from Zaragoza. He owns a few petrol stations. I asked about fuel purchases. He said people were spending exactly the same amount on petrol/diesel. However instead of spending 20€ and driving away with 15 litres, they were leaving with 12 litres.
