Spanish life is not always likeable but it is compellingly loveable – Christopher Howse: ‘A Pilgrim in Spain’.
Cosas de España/Galiza
A positive spin . . . From dictatorship to European Union powerhouse: Spain’s 40-year journey of successes, setbacks and stories that transformed a country.
A negative aspect . . . Spain’s graduate crisis has been laid bare: Almost 30% of youngsters work in jobs unrelated to their qualifications – the highest figure in Europe.
And another negative, possibly connected . . . Thanks to the support of young men, the populist, anti-immigration Vox party is surging in the polls.
Can there be greater indictments of the stupidity of having 3 ‘international’ airports for Galicia than:-
- 1. Galicia will have 20 fewer international routes this summer,
- 2. The airport of nearby Asturias now has more passengers than Galicia’s busiest facility, and
- 2. It’s predicted that the high-speed train line to Oporto will mean the end – not before time – of at least one of the 3.
This is a video of a 48 hour visit to Pv city, in reality to the old quarter only. The streets seem strangely empty, even when the winter rains weren’t falling. I was surprised to hear the couple complain that the old quarter isn’t really car-free, as they were regularly confronted by vehicles. Despite living in Ourense, they seemed not to know that this is because delivery vans and trucks are only allowed to deliver in the morning, when they did most of their walking around. Oh, and I also found the claim that the Parador is cheap outside the – longer-than-it-used-to be – high season.
