Quotes/Observations

Trump has set up the US for disaster and the polls are reflecting this.

From “The Return of Russia: From Yeltsin to Putin, the Story of a Vengeful Kremlin” by James Rodgers:-

  • In Trump, the US now had a president who wanted the US to become more like the autocracy into which Russia was rapidly evolving.
  • Trump basically confirmed everything that Putin ever thought about the USA: that we were just transactional, cynical, and full of it, that we don’t believe any more in democracy than anybody else does. And it was just a question of who shouted the loudest, who had the most money. We were just as corrupt. We were an oligarchy.
  • A member of the National Security Council has persuasively argued that Trump ‘admired the way Putin ran Russia like his own private company. People like Putin, who was simultaneously an autocrat and reputedly super-rich, were an elite of their own. This was the group Trump wanted to see himself in – the internationally very rich, very powerful, and very famous’.

It’s a truism that all political careers end in failure. I guess this is one way of describing Trump’s increasingly rapid progress towards that end point:-

  • Nepo baby of a (corrupt) billionaire, born with a (bent) silver spoon in his mouth.
  • Privileged sibling
  • Failed businessman, several times over
  • Successful tax-dodger
  • Successful playboy and womaniser
  • Very successful reality TV star
  • Successful grifter
  • Failed husband, thrice
  • Failed father
  • Failing would-be autocrat
  • In sum, an all-round failing human being who deserves the dementia coming to him.

It’s fair to ask whether someone with this history would be voted into a position of supreme power in any other modern democracy. And whether it’s the US worship of apparent success with money that lies behind his – for want of a better word – achievements

Non-comedic Commentaries

Fascinating. . . The USA is repeating the UK’s fatal mistake of 1956 that ended its empire.
