Awake, for morning in the bowl of night has flung the stone that puts
the stars to flight.

And, lo, the hunter of the east has caught the sultan’s turret in a noose of light.

Spanish life is not always likeable but it is compellingly loveable – Christopher Howse: ‘A Pilgrim in Spain’.

Cosas de España/Galiza

Down at the coalface . . . Spanish workers’ living standards steadily declining. So much for the best GDP growth in the EU. From which the rich are getting richer, of course.

A beginner’s guide to sherry (vino de jerez).

No great surprise t read that, since October, Spain nationally has seen 24% more rain than usual.

A propos . . . A Galician saying: Se chove, que chova/si llueve, que llueva: If it rains, let it rain – A saying that embodies a philosophy of life you’ll only understand if you grew up in Galicia (and which you should be applying now). A way of understanding the world which prioritises action and inner peace over external difficulties beyond our control.

A young Argentinian woman living in La Coruña has won a huge prize in a very popular TV game show. She’s said: “A boyfriend will come when he’s meant to”. I’ve put in my marriage proposal.

The UK

Desperate times for the (Labour) government . . . The political fallout from the Mandelosn-gate scandal has only just begun. . . . It’s not as if the government is in any position to weather a political crisis of this magnitude. For months, Starmer has been polling as the most unpopular prime minister on record. In the UK, such people simply don’t remain in power. Because there’s no written Constitution saying that they can.

The USA

Spanish

  • Inhibirse: To refrain. To be inhibited
  • Anegar: To flood, drown, overwhelm, etc.
  • Bajante: Downpipe

Did you know?

The story of a philosopher who distrusted clarity, avoided people, antagonized his intellectual peers, and became immortal anyway—largely through quotations that still manage to be simultaneously famous and unclear.

Finally . . .

I’ve caught 8 mice in 7 days in my kitchen. As I expected . . Yes, field-mice are often driven into houses during excessive rain. Heavy rainfall floods their burrows and nests, forcing them to seek dry, warm shelter indoors. They exploit small gaps in foundations, walls, or doors—often just 6mm wide—to enter homes or garages

The Usual Links . . .

You can get my posts by email as soon as they’re published. With the added bonus that they’ll contain the typos I’ll discover later. I believe there’s a box for this at the bottom of each post. If you do this but don’t read the posts, I will delete your subscription. So perhaps don’t bother if you have other reasons for subscribing . . .

I can also be read on Facebook.

For new readers: If you’ve landed here looking for info on Galicia or Pontevedra, try here. If you’re passing through Pontevedra on the Camino, you’ll find a guide to the city there.

If you´re thinking of moving to Spain, this link should be useful to you.

  1. Not having a constitution was not that brilliant a situation when Boris Johnson was at the helm. And if/when Nigel Farage becomes PM Britain will sorely miss not having one again. Keir Starmer is a decent chap. As was Sunak before him. A pity so many decent politicians seem to be ineffectual as well. Bit like Jimmy Carter. The only reason I’d like KS gone is because he said Britan would not rejoin the EU within his life time. That was a criminal error of judgement, for which I will not forgive him. But besides that I think he will stay on much longer than some people think. In part also because Britain has no constitution.
