Driving back from Madrid today, I got to wondering if the English word Raj was related to the German word Reich. The Oracle responded: Yes, “Raj” (rule or dominion, especially British rule in India) is related to “Reich” (realm, empire, or kingdom). Both words trace back to the Proto-Indo-European root h₃reǵ- or reg-, which conveys ideas of straightening, directing, ruling, or governing. “Raj” entered English via Hindi from Sanskrit.”Reich” derives from Common Germanic rīkijan (seen in Old High German rīhhi), also from the same root, while the related German adjective “reich” (rich) shares cognates like English “rich.”

Finally . . .

You get fined for parking the wrong way in Pv city. Or in Poio, at least. But not in grown-up Madrid, where the police have more serious things to worry about..
