Awake, for morning in the bowl of night has flung the stone that puts

And, lo, the hunter of the east has caught the sultan’s turret in a noose of light.

Spanish life is not always likeable but it is compellingly loveable – Christopher Howse: ‘A Pilgrim in Spain.

Cosas de España/Galiza

In Spain, what once seemed impossible is now widespread: the young are turning to the far right.

Quite rightly, Spain tells British tourists: “We’re not just sun, sea and sangria”. An ad campaign urges holidaymakers to explore the country’s hidden gems away from the bright lights of Benidorm and other resorts. The video features Galicia, about which I’m not entirely happy.

For those coming here or recently arrived . . . The U-curve of cultural adjustment. [There’s also my book of my first 15 months here – So, you think you want to move to Spain . . .]

There are now twice as many foreigners working in Pv city as there were 5 years ago. Venezuelans head the list, followed by Colombians, Portuguese, Peruvians, Brazilians, Moroccans, Italians, Chinese, Argentineans, Senegalese, Rumanians, and North Americans*. I don’t suppose they’re all working in the drug business.

*I guess most, if not all, are the young female ‘auxiliaries’, teaching kids how to speak English wrongly . . . 🙂

France

Allegedly France “is now Italy”. Moreover, Its chaos is a warning for Britain. Because: Just like in France, the UK Government has failed to deliver policies that reassure markets about fiscal discipline. And we all know how nasty unhappy markets can be.

How on earth do you mock the unmockable?

Russia

I guess this is good news – A Kremlin-backed propaganda film flops with Russian viewers. ‘Tolerance,’ a film depicting the ‘horrors of life in the West’, was watched by just 192 people on its opening weekend.

Social Media

“My daughter refuses to go to school — I don’t know what to do”. For 8 months a father has watched his teenager change, as fake social media videos left her afraid to even leave the house.

Spanish

  • Blablabear: You can probably guess. Not in the RAE dictionary.
  • Estremecer: Shudder, shake, shiver, etc.
  • Canícula: The dog days of summer – hot and sultry.

Finally . . .

I haven´t been bothered by begging gypsies for quite a while but it’s happened twice in the last week. I wonder what this portends. Perhaps a drop of income in one of the local settlements, after one of the regular police raids.

  2. Part of the problem with young people is ignorance. That ignorance was instilled by their grandparents, who refuse to criticize, or truly explain, the dictatorship. There is still fear among the older population. Stories were never handed down in families because of that fear. So, young people only receive the standard family history: “With Franco you could leave your doors unlocked.” “If anyone stole a bike, it would be found the next day.” “When the Guardia Civil patrolled the villages on foot, there was no crime,” etc. The dictatorship is painted as a fairy tale past, not the oppression it really was. I thank heaven all of the teenagers that come to me understand that the far right is anathema to progress and a modern state. Not all young people are lost.
