Awake, for morning in the bowl of night has flung the stone that puts
the stars to flight.

And, lo, the hunter of the east has caught the sultan’s turret in a noose of light.

Spanish life is not always likeable but it is compellingly loveable – Christopher Howse: ‘A Pilgrim in Spain.

Cosas de España

Strict rules for Brits coming to Spain will finally be in force within weeks. When the digital EES scheme is introduced on October 12, they’ll be faced by demands for proof of accommodation, sufficient funds for the trip, medical insurance and a return or onward ticket.

Possibly a repeat . . How to appeal a visa rejection.

Spain’s economy is the envy of Europe, but the plight of its strawberry pickers tells another story. All Moroccans, I’d guess.

They might ignore your personal space; they might party in the garden next door until 3 in the morning; they might make so much noise in a restaurant that you can’t hear yourself think; they might even smoke next to you when you’re eating on a terraza. But fall over in the street and every Spaniard around will rush to help you get up. As my sister discovered today. And they are the world’s best at donating their organs. I’ve long since given up trying to make sense of it all.

Cousas de Galiza

Sadly, another laudatory article on Pv city. I had to laugh at the comment that it’s called Casco Viejo. This refers only to the city’s medieval quarter, not the whole place.

Another wave of heat is imminent, with temperatures up in the hills reaching 42. Thank god it’s 7 degrees lower down here on the coast . . .

It’s reported that there’ll be a spur down from the Ourense-Santiago de Compostela rail-line to Pv city by 2040. I rather doubt it. I first heard this mooted 20 years ago, when the AVE high-speed line from Madrid to Ourense was promised for 2008. It actually arrived in 2021.

We’re scheduled to have fireworks tonight and then again on the 15th and 17th of the month. All at midnight. And all financed by taxpayers. By closing the 2 major car parks in which they’re set up, these add to the traffic chaos of the city. All in the name of fun, which is – and always has been – extremely important in Spain. Even when it was poor.

THE MAGA REALITY TV SHOW

Trumpisms

  • You should report what the guy on CNN said about Trump. That I have the best polling results ever. [The chap actually said he had the worst!]
  • I don’t know what the Assistant Attorney General said to Ghislaine Maxwell but he is well respected by everyone and I’m sure it was all above board.

AEP in warning mode – re stagflation. The economic “phoney war” of the last six months is over. America, Europe and the world, are finally starting to suffer real damage from the destruction of the post-war trading system.

South Park v Cristi Noem, round 3.

What a Mar-a-Lago face looks like.

Quotes of the Day

  • Ghislaine Maxwell: I saw no conduct by Donald Trump that caused me concern. [This from a woman who wasn’t concerned by the rape of under-age women and who wants a pardon from Trump.]
  • You could drive a coach and horses through Maxwell’s statement.
  • The market narrative that the worst is over and that stability will come will surely become a collectors’ item for historians and students of the capitalist psyche. Nothing is ever stable with Trump.

The Way of the World

Saddening. Today’s university students. Though hopefully not all of them.
