Awake, for morning in the bowl of night has flung the stone that puts the stars to flight.

And, lo, has caught the sultan’s turret in a noose of light!

Spanish life is not always likeable but it is compellingly loveable: Christopher Howse: ‘A Pilgrim in Spain

Cosas de España

It being Easter . . .

At least in one bit of Spain there’s going to be a crackdown on the tourist apartments that are causing so many problems for local residents. But, given that many/most of these are undeclared, one wonders how successful the measures will be.

Interesting to note that the average tourist uses more water per capita than the average resident. More education needed, I fear. Though I guess it’s logical that folk who come here for the sun/heat use more water than the annual average during their short stay. So, maybe not a very meaningful statistic.

As there might be a reader of this blog over 65, here’s good news re a Tuesday night entertainment option.

The UK

A teacher has been found to have been ‘justifiably’ sacked because he ‘violated the dignity’ of female pupil who self-identified as male. I wish I’d known of that concept/crime when I was being caned at primary school and later strapped by sadistic Christian Brothers at my grammar school on Merseyside. Not to mention my mother, who caned me again each time she learned I’d violated her dignity be being punished at school. Parents were real parents back then . . .

The USA

The ‘Uber of the skies’. Maybe. At least 50 years after it was first envisaged.

The FT tells us here who a successful Trump will have below him. Trigger warning . . .

El Iberico is a London-issued journal for Spanish speakers in the UK. Here it tells them how to be rude in (British) English. I’m not convinced that the original meaning of ‘sod’ was ‘idiot’ or the like.

Did you know? . . .

Your car might well be snitching on you, especially if you bought it recently. With dire consequences for your insurance premiums. An un-brave new world.

Finally . . .

If you agree that US presidents are really just figureheads, try imagining a galleon in full sail with Trump on the prow. I just did but didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

The Usual Links . . .

You can get my posts by email as soon as they’re published. With the added bonus that they’ll contain the typos I’ll discover later. I believe there’s a box for this at the bottom of each post. I guess it’s logical that this doesn’t appear on the version given to me . . .

For new readers:– If you’ve landed here looking for info on Galicia or Pontevedra, try here. If you’re passing through Pontevedra on the Camino, you’ll find a guide to the city there – updated a bit in early July 2023.

For those thinking of moving to Spain:- This is an extremely comprehensive and accurate guide to the challenge, written by a Brit who lives in both the North and the South and who’s very involved in helping Camino walkers. And this is something on the so-called Beckham Rule, which is beneficial – tax-wise – for folk who want to work here.
