29 February. Thank god for the end of the month with the superfluous R in its name.

Awake, for morning in the bowl of night has flung the stone that puts the stars to flight.

And, lo, has caught the sultan’s turret in a noose of light!

Spanish life is not always likeable but it is compellingly loveable: Christopher Howse: ‘A Pilgrim in Spain’

Cosas de España

Straight from my In Box, the UK government’s updated list of English-Speaking medical and dental practitioners in Spain. Not a lot in Galicia. None in fact. Not a place for those averse to learning at least one of the 2 co-official languages.

Sevilla’s mayor is proposing to charge folk to see one of the city’s main attractions. Can’t say I’m bothered, as I’ve seen it 3 times and – because of tourist numbers – have resolved never to visit the city again. At any time of the year.

Talking of sights . . . It might just be your thing – Spain’s best preserved medieval prisons.

The UK

Richard North writes here of the insanity he perceives to be increasing in the UK.

If that’s not polemical enough for you, here’s another blast of the trumpet against the monstrous regiment of incompetent, out-of-touch politicians et al.. . . . JK Rowling’s heroism has exposed the cowardice of Britain’s ruling class. It’s a sign of how broken our politics is that it’s taken an author to galvanise action against extremists.

Covid

How Sweden proved the world wrong. But will it matter next time round?

(A)GW/Energy/Net Zero

Will graphene – the wonder kid of the materials world – help in the pursuit of NZ.

The Way of the World

More on the problems created for Gen Z kids. Bad therapy is stunting them. Come back the paterfamilias?

Did you know? . . .

Here’s how the hollow-face illusion works.

Finally . . .

The wit of Samuel Johnson, Number 9: The applause of a single human being is of great consequence.

Does anyone know how to stop getting this message every time I open Gmail?: We’re sorry, but your account is temporarily unavailable. We apologise for the inconvenience and suggest trying again in a few minutes.

The Usual Links . . .

You can get my posts by email as soon as they’re published. With the added bonus that they’ll contain the typos I’ll discover later. I believe there’s a box for this at the bottom of each post. I guess it’s logical that this doesn’t appear on the version given to me . . .

For new readers:– If you’ve landed here looking for info on Galicia or Pontevedra, try here. If you’re passing through Pontevedra on the Camino, you’ll find a guide to the city there – updated a bit in early July 2023.

For those thinking of moving to Spain:- This is an extremely comprehensive and accurate guide to the challenge, written by a Brit who lives in both the North and the South and who’s very involved in helping Camino walkers.

  1. gmail: It’s usually a server issue Colin. If you haven’t already tried, do a cache and cookie clean on all your devices. If that doesn’t work, try on a different Internet browser. If none of those work, see of there is a way to reset your current to a new password.

I can’t think of anything else, but your emails, data etc are safe. Unless you account has been compromised, which I doubt because you wouldn’t get that type of message.

  2. The Covid article was very interesting. My biggest relief was that I brought my Mum to a Spanish care home in 2017. Seeing the UK care home disaster was for me quite possibly one of the most shocking political outcomes in modern history. Even worse is that nobody seems to have had to accept responsibility.

I did slightly envy Sweden. Back in 2009 I was very close to accepting a job there. But having already experienced -20 degree winters on business trips, I decided against it.
