These are the P J O’Rourke quotes which mysteriously disappeared from the draft in WordPress . . .

First ones, both from way back in 1987:-

I can’t bear the dreadful, glum earnestness of the Left. People who worry themselves sick over sexism in language and think the government sneaks into their houses at night and puts atomic waste into the kitchen disposal unit can’t be expected to have a sense of humour. And they don’t

Some people are unable to experience even the slightest of life’s pleasures without being thrown into frenzies of analysis.

  1. I disagree with PJ O’Rourke. I’m leftist and I can laugh at a totally inappropriate joke while recognizing its total inappropriateness. Just part of the human duality. 😊

  2. This is in reference to your comment the other day admitting (albeit reluctantly) that the best solution to fix the NHS’ problems is to privatise it. And this is Daniel Hannan (Brexit mastermind and arch-nationalist ideologue) yesterday in the DT: “First, he (Keir Starmer) could bring the NHS into line with European healthcare systems, where public and private provision coexist. The NHS is arguably the single biggest drag on our growth, both directly and indirectly”. It is not the first time (to my own surprise and delight) that I read an article in the DT written by a right wing commentator proposing a “European” solution. It would reduce costs, and, at least for the last 40 years or so, the end result has always been undeniably better: lower infant mortality rates, higher cancer recovery rates, higher life expectancy, overall a much healthier population. Full privatisation would mean the USA model. I shudder. I still remember the story of a British teenager skying in Vermont a few years ago. Had an accident and broke his leg. But nobody would give any cure until he was able to provide proof of a access to funds. I believe the final bill cost his entire leg (and one of his arms).

    Merry XXXmas.

  3. I have been in favour of a European style model for at least 2 decades, if not 3.

My comment was a counsel of despair reflecting an acceptance of the unlikelihood that this would ever be introduced.
